Show A Gigantic Task According to the New York Times, the recently reorganized Tariff Commission faces a gigantic task in adjusting rates and has a future fu-ture certain to be filled with trials and tribulations. In the case of many complaints against present duties, long periods of investigation are necessary before the Commission Commis-sion can change rates to conform with sound economic practices. The importance oi the tariff to domestic prosperity and progress is inealcuable. If rates are too Iilgn, our foreign trade suffers and we must pay too much for commodities. commodi-ties. If too low, our industries and voters are forced to meet cheap-labor foreign competition at the expense of wage and living standards. The only good tariff is one which equalizes, by the levying levy-ing of duties, discrepancies in producing pro-ducing costs at home and abroad. It will be the duty of the Commission Commis-sion to ' attain this ideal. |
