Show Cats Stay 1 On Top With Dart Victory By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports KAYSVILLE -- Wildcat coach Wayne Bat- ' er was a little concerned that Davis might tryt0 hold the ball on them last Friday so he laid a j little full-court press on the Darts to get then running a little and the result was a 58-33 vie- ' tory for the visiting Cats. j "THE PRESS wasn't to steal the ball or any- : thing but just to give them problems getting up . the floor. They were very deliberate on ofTense :j but they didn't try to sit on it" added Baker, The Darts did break the press several times in 3 the early going and headed straight for He :'Y bucket but on more than one occasion the taller ;,r Cats rejected the shots headed toward the 3 bucket. "We were just too big for them, Hons- s keeper must have had about five blocked shots 1 alone." ; 5 It was Mr. Houskeeper that the Darts were i concerned with the most on offense because .1 everywhere Houskeeper went three Darts were sure to follow. That left other Wildcats open on the offensive side of the floor with j senior power forward Todd Robinson getting free for a team high 15 points. The starting five -- really didn't score that much, Housekeeper 5 added 12, McCleery 9, Longson 7, but they , didn't see much action in the second half as the 1 Wildcats used ten men in the battle. ; Early Lead WOODS CROSS jumped out to a 10-1 lead -1 which finished up being 13-3 at the end of the first period, "Davis was simply not hitting their shots, either that or we would block their ."i attempts." Then the Dart coaches went to , their young players including several sophomores sopho-mores who saw plenty of action in this battle. Baker summed up his feelings like this, "I'm . pleased with the win at Davis, it's always been hard to win at their place and I have all the , respect in the world for Mike Gardner and his program. They covered us up pretty good in- ., side but it left us wide open on the outside, we didn't hit like I feel we can out there but maybe we were too open to hit them if that's possible' ' he smiled. " INDEED A REGION win on the road is hard : ; to come by these days and now the Wildcats "' have broken into the road win column. Tit ,: victory gives the Cats a 2-0 region mark while the Darts fell to 0-2. Woods Cross is on a roll right now while the Darts are still experimenting with their play- ers. Several seniors left the squad last week so the coaches are almost back to square one in regards to just who plays. Mike Gardner is 1 good coach and the Darts are going to cause some problems before this season is over. So are the Wildcats who have established themselves them-selves are legitimate contenders for the title |
