Show I C PENNY CO. TO OPEN FIFTY THREE STORES NEXT SPRINT. The J. C. Penney Co has Just announced an-nounced the assignment of fifty-three new stores to be opened in the spring f 1929. making the total number of stores 1075. The growth of this Company has been phenomenal. From 1922 to the close of 1927, the store units increased from 371 to 892. In 1927, 147 stores were opened, and the gross volume of business for the year was $151,957.80" In 1928. with 1000 stores in operation, it is expected that the $190,000,000 mark will be reached. The fifty-three new stores will be opened In the following states: Arizona (1) Arkansas (4), California (a), Colorado Colo-rado (1), Georgia :3. Illinois .1. Iowa (2), Kansas 3, Kentucky (1). Missouri (4). Mississippi (1), New Mexico (1), North Carolina (3), Ohio, Oklahoma 2, South Carolina (1. Tennessee '2), Texas (5), Washington (3), Wisconsin (5). Although the average population of hrsc towns Is 3.500. several larger cities cit-ies are Included In the locations, among them St. Louis. Mo., Tulsa. Oklahoma, and ElPaso, Texas. This is in accord with the policy of the Company recently re-cently adopted In which the next forward for-ward step in expansion will be in the larger population centers.
