Show Are We Lawless? We hear a lot about lawlessness in America, and it is true that we a'e lawless in one sense of the word That is, there is more disregard of law in this country, perhaps, than in any other on the globe. However, if we define lawless to mean being without laws, we are certainly cer-tainly anything else but. We live under many thousands of laws ano crddinances. most of which the average aver-age citizen never hear of. A recent statement by T. R. Preston, formei president of the American Bankers Association will illustrate this. lie said: "It would take a man working eight hours a day seven years to read all the laws enacted last year, yet ignorance ig-norance of the law is no excuse. Courts are so congested that the district dis-trict attorney of New York estimates that if every defendant should demand de-mand a jury trial, the calendars would be 500 years behind in four yr-ars. Americans will go to war and give their life's blood for liberty and then turn around and enact laws depriving de-priving themselves of all liberty." To which we may only add: "Ain't it the truth?" |
