Show Mount Pleasant Celebrates In Patriotic Style The people of Mount Pleasant set aside all business cares Monday, Mon-day, February 22nd, and entered into a spirit of patriotism and celebrated cel-ebrated George Washington's 200 birthday anniversary, it being the first of a series of patriotic programs pro-grams to be given during the year including up to Thanksgiving day. The town was decorated with flags in the morning and business houses remained closed in honor of the "Father of Our Country." A patriotic program was given at 2 p. m. at the Elite Theatre under the direction of Dr. W. P. Winters, Mayor of Mount Pleasant. Pleas-ant. The program was given in the following manner: A selection by the high school orchestra. Rev. N. R. Smith offered of-fered the opening prayer. A beautiful flag salute was presented pre-sented by members of Battery "D" and the American Legion. Judge Dilworth Woolley of the Seventh Judicial District Court of Manti was the orator of the day. He said that he wished to call attention at-tention to the fact that George Washington is the Father of his Country. In eloquent manner Judge Woolley spoke of the ancestry, an-cestry, early boyhood and youth, education and experiences of George Washington. He said that at the age of 16 Washington began be-gan work of surveying a large estate es-tate or tract of land and to this day the survey is still the points of location. The judge stated that Wasliington's military education edu-cation was obtained by experience in being selected to advise the French to turn back from their invasion of certain territory. As to his military genius Judge Wool-ley Wool-ley said it was Washington's purpose pur-pose to win the war which was done at the battle of orktown and independence was gained. He said that Washington surrounded himself by all interests in establishing estab-lishing this government and he. rendered services without pay; therefore, Washington justly deserves de-serves the title of "Father of His Country." Judge Woolley said that we learn a great lesson in the lives of Washington and Lincoln. The song, "America" by tho audience, was led by Mrs. Ina L. Jones with Mrs. Sardoni at the piano. Mrs. C. W. Sorensen gave a short talk and announced a tree dedicating ceremony to be held at the North and South ward chapels and the North Sanpete high school grounds. A song, "Father of Liberty," was beautifully rendered ren-dered by eight young ladies. Mrs. Ben Staker gave a reading and a double trio, "Loyal Song" was given by Mrs. R. D. Jones, Mrs. Margaret Hone, Mrs. T. W. Jensen, Jen-sen, Mrs. A. H. Anderson, Mrs. Charles . Sneddon and Mrs. I. W. Jones. Elson Jones and Douglas Jor-gensen Jor-gensen gave a violin and saxaphone saxa-phone duet of Southern melodies. The high school orchestra gave another selection and Bishop A. L. Peterson offered the benediction. In the evening Battery "D" 222nd Field Artillery gave a military mili-tary ball in full colors. Colonel Gardener of Salt Lake City was in attendance and made the statement state-ment that Battery "D" was the only organization that could put on a full show as the local unit did. They had a big time and a big celebration. |
