This day, which is perhaps as widely observed as any other day in this country, was set apart and had its beginning as a tribute to the deaa soldier. And this big annual ceremony is only a small part of what is being , done as a memorial to the men who have died in the military ranks. Sev eral cf America's most vital organizations organiz-ations have been formed and developed develop-ed around the memory and as a tribute trib-ute to the soldier dead. There are the Sons and Daughters of the Revolution, Revolu-tion, thre is the G. A. R. and there is the American Legion. All of these organiza'ions functioning throughout the Jen-;h and breadth of this country coun-try to k"ep alive the memory of those who dif-d in the service of their country. coun-try. And half the hero tales of youth , revolve around the life and death of (Continued on last page) Battery "D" Prepares for Its Annua Encampment (Continued from first page) these same soldiers. In view of the deep interest there is In the dead of this class one sometimes some-times wonders why there is so much indifference to the living who wear the uniform of their country. Does a soldier have no virtue until he is dead? Are all good soldiers dead ones? Is there no honor in equiping oneself to do the thing- that has made heroes of so many? There are today hundreds of men in this country who are preparing themselves to do the very thing for which the dead are being glorified. And there are hundreds of men who would walk five miles to listen to a tribute paid to the soldier dead and would walk just as far to keep a son of theirs from preparing for such a service. Why not give a flower to the living? Why not pass a word of encouragement encourage-ment to the organizations that are devoted de-voted to the nations safety? Why. when a land pays annual tribute to its soldier dead and creates organization after organization to perpetuate their memory are there so few people who are willing to make the slightest sacrifice sac-rifice in the interest of the soldier living. liv-ing. Battery D, 222nd F. A. has just pas sed through its annual period of abuse and is ready to entrain for its summer sum-mer training camp. In this w-ork it has its supporters, but the people who are willing to honor the dead soldier in the same breath that they curse the one living, who are willing to believe in preparation for everything except the nations defense, are all too numerous. num-erous.
