Show I Mississippi's Governors ! A student of Mississippi's historical ! records announces the rather surprising surpris-ing discovery that of the 34 governors who have served that state, only 10 I have bem native Mississippians, says the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Somh Carolina contributed five, Virginia Vir-ginia four. Tennessee three, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio twj apiece, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, 'I-.ir.o a::d Illinois, one each. It Is explained, however, (hat practically all of the "outsiders" resided in Mississippi Mis-sissippi for many years before their elevation ro the governorship. Gov. Adelbert Ames, the notable exception to this rule, arrived as "Military Governor" Gov-ernor" after the war between the states and bis stay in Mississippi terminated ter-minated with his retirement from the executive offices. Of the last eight governors it is noted that seven have been native sons. Also it Is recalled that Mississippi has sent a number of native sons to governorships, senutor- I ships and other high offices In other states. |
