Show COLLEGE SHEEP SPECIALIST VISITS SANPETE COUNTY Prefessor Alma Esplin, Sheep and Wool Specialist of the Agricultural College, spent three days in Sanpete County recently. While here Professor Pro-fessor Esplin met the sheep men in general meetings at Fairview. Ft. Green, Ephraim, and Manti. .Meetings .Meet-ings were held with the 'boys sheep clubs at Fairview Spring City, Ep-raim, Ep-raim, and Manti. Briefly Professor Esplin covered the following points in his general talks: (1) Statistically the outlook foi the sheep business looks good. The supp.ly of wool in the world is con s'.derably below normal and the total to-tal number of sheep is less than a fAw vearj aeo. r The present dif ficulty or slow wool market is -due to under normal consumption. It looks as though wool will bring a better price than present market prices would indicate. (2) Our present. Rambouilet Breed has been developed through centuries of careful breeding to fit oun particular rane conditions. A majority of the wool produced in Sanpete is fine combing wool. Breeders Breed-ers should consider carefully before changing or mixing breeds. This problem needs careful study by all who are in the business. (3) Wool producers can make money by taking more time at the shearing corrals. Shearers, Fleece tiers, and sackers should lie under contract to do more careful work and thus send the product to market in better condition. (4) Sheep culling should be prac tlced and some' wool grading done at .hearing plants. (5) From returns received from the U. S. Department of Agriculture on the shrinkage analysis for the samples of wool sent from Sanpete County, compiled figures show an average shrinkage of 62.05 per cent. While this does not give an absolut ely accurate check, it is wuuin one or two percent of being correct Such work should be continued Vny wool producer may have an an alysis made by applying to your county agent, without cost. (6) Wool growers should study their business more from a scientific scien-tific standpoint, that is. learn more about breeding and wo,ol itself Then cooperate more closely in growing and marketing of the product. pro-duct. Many other problems were mentioned men-tioned in various ways. |
