Show Flood Drowns Fourteen Men San Francisco Fourteen men were drowned at Orinda, fifteen miles east of Oakland, when the concrete tunnel which they were constructing flooded us the result of a cloudburst which caused a coffer dam to break and send a torrential flood into the tunnel. The men were working on the Mokelunine' river aiiueiluct, which will bring a new water supply to Oakland. Officials of I lie construction company verified the report of the tragedy, but stated t'.ie names of dead could not be ascertain-, ed until pumps had been brought to the scene of the tragedy. That the men could not possibly have escaped drowning was the opinion of the manager man-ager of the construction crew, who said that the waters from Orinda creek rose so raipidly that the men working in the tunnel could not have been warned in time to save themselves. |
