"His mother and daddy would tell him that goblins were very much like brownies nnd that they always played among themselves. "They told him that the goblins were jolly nnd good-natured and would j never dream of frightening any little i boy or girl. j "Hut still, for some strange reason, j Teter was very much afraid of even the name of goblin. ! "His father told him a story every night at bedtime, but after the lights were out he would begin to think of the goblins and would Imagine every creak in the room must mean something. some-thing. "One night after Peter's father had told him a story and the lights were out Peter lay for few moments wide awake. "Put he had been playing hard nil day, so It was not long before he fell sound asleep. "In bis sleep tt funny-looking gonnn came to him and tapped him on tin shoulder. "It was the first time Peter had seen a goblin ; but, strangely enough, he was not scared. " 'Hello, Peter!' said the goblin. Tm glad to see you're not afraid of me. " 'I knew you wouldn't be after you'd really seen me. " 'Often people imagine we're dreadful dread-ful creatures, and. you see. we're not at all. " 'We like to have plenty of fun, j "I've Brought Peter Along." and we would never hurt any one for anything in the world. "That doesn't sound very awful, does It?' "'No,' said i'eter; T think you're just as nice as you can be. "'I can't imagine how I ever could have been frightened. I really can't imagine how I could have been ex-' ex-' cept, of course, I didn't know you.' " 'Well, Peter, as long as you're not frightened at me any more, how would you like to go on a coasting party we goblins are giving tonight?' So Peter got up and put on his warmest coasting clothes and pulled a woolly red cap way down over his i oars, and otT lie started wim m goblin. 'When they got outside they walked to a nearby hill, where there were quantities of goblins with their sleds. "They were tossing the light falling snow into each other's face and laughing laugh-ing and having such a good time. " 'I've brought Peter along,' said Peter's goblin, 'and he says he's not afraid of us any more.' "'Hurrah for Peter!' cried all the goblins. "I'eter did have t lie best llmecoast-i llmecoast-i ing. nnd he thought the goblins were perfectly wonderful. "They were all delighted that he was no longer afraid of them and that i he enjoyed the snowstorm Just ns much as they did. j "Put. oh. even ihe snowstorm parly with the goblins had to end. for I'eter heard his mother saying : ""J'hiie to get up. I'eter. and you can take your sled to school with you, for it has been snowing all night.' j "And Peter realized It was all a , dream, hut hi' never again was afraid i of goblins for he knew that some j dreams were real." |
