Show The Poultry Business On .A OunUly Basis Cannot He Overdone Hoc The poultry industry has come to Utah to stay. If hi;h quality products are produced there is no eminent dan' ger of an over production. The poui-i try business from 200 to 500 hens fits admirably on the average farm, and should be adopted as a general pract-1 ice in Sanpete County. Strict pract-1 ice in sanitary measures should bo maintained and culling should go on every day in the year. These are the main thots left us by Professor Warner, Extension Poultry Specialist of the Agricultural College, who recently re-cently visited Sanpete County. The lowly hen has been brought frcm a production of 12 eggs in its wild jungle enviroment, to a recent worlds record by one white leghorn hen of 354 eggs in one year. The business has grown larger propor-lions propor-lions than the a vera ye person would ever suspect. Compiled figures of several years back show that in the United States, poultry had a value of $1,047,000,000.00, or it was six times greater than the value of horse and mules; Seven time3 greater than the value of Sheep. Nine tenths as great as the value of hogs. Twelve times .greater than the value of wool. One third as great as the value of dairy animals. It is $300,000,000.-00 $300,000,000.-00 greater than all the Wheat. It requires a poultry house twenty feet wide and 'ong enough to reach from Xew York to California four times ;o house the birds. It. requires five million tons oT feed per year twenty six billion egirs are produced each yerr which is sufficient if placed plac-ed en! to end to make a cable reaching reach-ing from the earth to the moon four times. With reference to consumption, New York alone uses, 8 million rasea of eggs yearly, or 83 car loads daily or 50 car loads for one breakfast 34 car loads of live poultry and 30 rt-ir loads of dressed poultry daily. Utah in 11)20 was actually importing import-ing f.-KKs and the price fell so low in the spring and su miner sea -ion that ,ry,'gs weren't worth gathering. Sin ,e "organizing to hamllo the marketing of the produc'.s hy the poaltryinen 1 hemsclves, the husinrss has been made profitable and lias grown un'il in 1926 Utah exported 3."j0 car loads r.-f eggs, and topp"d tlie Xew York .Market with the famous. "Utah Milk White ry-gs." Without quality jiroduction and loyal cooperative effort ef-fort this could never have been ix-compli.shed. ix-compli.shed. These two factors -will of necessity have to maintain if the business continues to grow and prosper. |
