Show CANN1NU WITHOUT SUGAR. 1 Until the next crop of sugar is in we must use less sugar in order that g some may be sent to the soldiers and g Allies. B It is very urgent that each family put up for winter use a good supply 1 of fruits and vegetables. But it is necessary to use sugar in them this I year. It is suggested that fruit be I canned with no sugar. Later, when 1 fruit is more plentiful, it can be add- 3 ed. The juice may be poured off, the I . sugar added, boiled up, then added I to the fruit. Of course this is a little 1 bother, and we don't like to be bothered, but when it is war necessity we can do many things. Less, jams and jellies should be made this season. Fruit juice should be bottled now and later made into jelly. They may be made using part syrup. Fresh fruit is excellent canned can-ned with from one third to one half white Karo. Fruits may be made into leathers, to be used in the winter for pies, or as sauces, or lor children in place of candy. We cau all cut our consumption consump-tion of candy and be better for it. Last year enough candy was eaten in .our country to buy twice the amount of food used in Belgium in one year. Lrying fruit saves sugar , and is healthful. Where sugar is desired in preserving preserv-ing vegetables use brown sugar or syrups. For pickles brown sugar is . very good. ' MRS. EDITH R. LEWIS Emerg. Home Demenstrator Agent |
