Utah is a part of the nation and we cannot as patriotic citizens, afford to Ignore this probelm, even though there Is less tuberculosis In this state than In other parts of the country, utie uenenciai enect oi war Is the quickening of the national consciousness. con-sciousness. We have taken up food conservation on a national scale. The response of the nation to the Liberty Loan drives, the Red Cross campaigns, cam-paigns, and the other national movements move-ments for the winning of the war have been a revelation to ourselves. Signs are abundant that the nation is preparing to attack tuberculosis In the same magnificent spirit. For years we have been lighting tuberculosis In the local piece-meal spirit, each community caring for its own consumptives in an Inadequate way without much regard for what other communities may be doing. Even then, we accomplished much and the death rate from tuberculosis has steadily declined. But the war has brought in its train a tremendous Increase In the disease. We must alter our methods and Increase our forces to meet this new condition. For several years there has been agitation for the establishing of a division on tuberculosis in the national na-tional Public Health Service. The demand for this step is daily becoming becom-ing more insistent. The problem is too big for private organizations to handle alone. But until that is done, the private organizations must continue con-tinue to bear the burden of the fight. , A nation-wide campaign is being launched to enlist every man, woman and child in this crusade against the most insidious, most merciless and, when neglected in the beginning, the most hopeless of all diseases. |
