Show JACK FROST'S CLEVER TRICKS ; Chief Among Them Is Ability to Mako '. Water That Is Frozen an Excep- ' tion to the Rule. 1 .Tack Frost is a very clever fellow, for S not only is he an artist for every- 1 one has seen the beautiful designs lie i draws on the window but he also does ! some wonderful conjuring tricky. As you know, he bursts pipes, and this is how he does it, the Montreal j Herald states : j First of all, you should remember 1 that "Jack Frost" is merely another ! name for the extreme winter cold, j which is below freezing point. I Nearly every substance in nature expands or stretches when heated and contracts or occupies a smaller space ! when the temperature falls, but water ! is an exception to this rule. For, S though it expands when healed, it does ! not contract when frozen ; on the con- I trary, it expands once more. You can prove this yourselves on a frosty day by this simple experiment: Fill a bottle with water right up to the cork, and leave it out to freeze over-night. In the morning you will find that the cork is right out of the neck of the bottle on a piece of ice. Now, this shows that water expands when frozen, and that is exactly what ha)pens when the water freezes in a pipe. It expands and bursts the pipe, and it is not until the water thaws j and gushes out that we know about 1 1 |
