Show NAVY RECRUITING PARTYJS COMING The Navy Department has author-zed author-zed a Navy Traveling Recruiting Party operating from the Salt Lake City Station, -which is tourins the cities in Utah, Idaho and Montana. While the primary object of this party is to obtain recruits, another jbject, nearly, if not quite so importing import-ing is that of informing the popula tiou in general in regard to the Navy of today and the opportunities it offers of-fers to young men of good character (No others are desired). Many persons living in interior homes have a wrong impression regarding re-garding the caliber and character of .he en of the Navy. The days of the "tough," chewing, liquor drink-ng drink-ng sailor of Stevenson's "Treasure Island" days have passed. The sailor of today, being recruited from gram-nar gram-nar and high schools mostly, is a self respecting, ambitious American try-ng try-ng to better himself physically, mentally men-tally and financially. The attention of the public ia cvlle 1 to the fact that no intoxicating liquor ia permitted on board ship except under un-der the supervision of the Medical Officer. Chaplains are attached to all the larger vessels who look after the spiritual welfare of the men. A savings sav-ings bank paying interest is maintained main-tained by the government. The Paymaster Pay-master looks after the financial, and the Medical officer looks after the physical welfare of the men. Our men average about nineteen years of age. The Navy is, at this writing, 22,-622 22,-622 men short of those needed to man vessels built and building, therefore it Ue opportunities for advancement are better than ever before. A modern battleship requireB many skilled tradesmen and the Navy main, tains many trade schools to train the mien to (111 the positions open to them, schools, for instance, for instruction in machinery, electricity, wireless, carpentry, book-keeping, pharmacy and nursing, blacksmithing, copper-ismithing copper-ismithing and many other lines.' ' A bright, ambitious young man may obtain an .opportunity to attend one of these schools, thereby perfect, ing himself in a trade which will be of great advantage in civil life should he elect not to continue in the service. During his schooling he receives his regular pay. Appointments to the Naval Academy Acad-emy as midshipmen are open to the twenty five highest enlisted men passing pass-ing the competitive examinsion held each year. The Navy Department has on file at the Salt Lake office the names and addresses of many Montana boys who' have "made good." Many of them now are proficient tradesmen and all of them (who were awarded HONORABLE HONOR-ABLE discharges) recommend the Navy. attention should be paid the "Ne'er Do Well" who have been given a bad conduct or other bad dis. charge, of which there are a number. W. R. Stevens, chief gunnerB mate, and W. Hendry, chief machinist mate, arrived In Mount Pleasant yesterday yes-terday as an advance party to make preliminary arrangements. They have secured an office in the Ericksen building for the recruiting party whiih will arrive here from Ephraim .April 14th and remain until April IS. i The President has requested tho Navy department to increase the Navy to 87,000 enlisted men. |
