Show Ji Proclamation! BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF UTAH A PROCLAMATION Whereas, Every thoughtful citizen,, by reason of the events of overshadowing importance which are being written into the history of our time, appreciating the destiny of this nation in the influence of world affairs and as the bearer of the torch of liberty, justice and equality to all peoples, is deeply sensible of I the obligation resting upon the able-bodied men of military age to share the burdens as well as the advantages, liberties and opportunities op-portunities guaranteed to them by the constitution; and, I. Whereas, The conviction must rest with every patriotic American that in order to defend the principles upon which this government is founded, there must exist, in addition to the : standing army and the navy, an organized, disciplined, trained and efficient body of citizenry armed and equipped and with the present ability to do; and, I "Whereas, It has been made plain by our own history that untrained men sent forth to battle, whether or not they are physically able, are committed to needless sacrifice of life and wellJDeing; that the nation is exposed to dangers and disadvantages disadvan-tages on the field of battle if the organization of its forces is delayed de-layed until hostilities are actually begun; and, "Whereas, The present international situation unmistakably unmistak-ably indicates the likelihood of this government's being called upon to muster its land and sea forces in defense of its national honor and to champion in behalf of humanity and civilization the cause of right and justice, and in such event this state would be required to present its full quota of able-bodied and trained men for service ; now, "Therefore, I, Simon Bamberger, governor of the state of Utah, do by this proclamation call upon the able-bodied men of this commonwealth, not exempted by. law, and of military age: to discharge one of the obligations of citizenship by voluntarily enlisting in the national guard. , "In thus- prominently bringing to notice this obligation which every elector assumes as he exercises his right of suffrage, suf-frage, an obligation to which every native American is born, and which every naturalized citizen should feel it an honor to accept, public notice is hereby given that the state of Utah, by enactment enact-ment of the Twelfth Legislature, has brought its military code into consonance with the national defense act as approved June 3, 1916, whereby the national guard of the several states was brought under federal control. I "Armories are maintained in Salt Lake, Ogden, Logan, Provo, Manti, Mount Pleasant and Ephraim, where full informa-1 tion pertaining to the service may be obtained. I ' ' In order, therefore, that the National Guard of the State of Utah may be at all times ready to respond to a call for its service as a part of the defensive force of the United States; and in order that the national guard of this state may be at all times prepared to" render efficient and honorable service when so called out by the President and Congress, I urge' men of military mili-tary age within this state not now members of this force of citizen-soldiery to immediately discharge the obligation that is theirs, that they may do their just part in upholding the dignity and honor of their common country, preserve the traditions of the state and do honor to themselves. "In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of Utah. Done at Salt Lake City, the Capitol, this 24th day of March, A. D. 1917. SIMON BAMBERGER, Governor. "By the governor: "Harden Bennion, Secretary of State." |
