Show Utah Manganese Attracis Notice Of Mining World Moab, Utah, Jan. 14. It is now pretty generally recognized that Utah has practically all the manganese there is in the United States and the richest beds are (lose to Green Kiver in Grand county. Russia has end-jess end-jess manganese beds and is practically practical-ly the headquarters of the world for this metal, but the war has shut them out of the market altogether until the war closes, which r.ow seems far remote. The metal is used in electric batteries bat-teries of all kinds, in making glass and in hardening the riflings of ri:!es and guns, as well as in numerous other ways. In peaceful times it can be laid down at the eastern manufacturer's door at less than it costs to transport trans-port it now from Utah to New- York City. The local product is said to be now-bringing now-bringing $1." per ton and recent samples have assayed a high as 8 5 and PO per cent pure manganese, It is claimed. The Dahling. Green, the local auto liverymen, and he inspected al! the well known deposits, took samples sam-ples of the ores and upon returning to town he expressed himself as mighty well pleased with the field in general. "The conditions look good," he said, "I believe I can work up a good ore buying business here, as I never saw a country befor? that has such extensive vakies." Mr. Gilchrist is quoted as saying that he expected to spend probably $25,000 investigating the field and it is believed that he has already expended ex-pended something like $G.O0O in .freight, etc., handling the six or more cars of ore that have gone from here to his firm. He advances money to the claim owners to mine and load their ore. Mr. Gilchrist is regarded re-garded as the biggest buyer of ores and developer of properties in New-York New-York City and his associates are reputed re-puted to be men who do big things.
