Makes Offer to Aguas Calientes Convention Con-vention to Give Up His Post in Mexico Mex-ico If His Foe Also Will Retire Re-tire to Private Life. Mexico City. Venustiano Carranza submitted his resignation to the Aguas Calientes convention on Tuesday. His offer to relinquish his post as supreme chief of the nation, however, is conditional condi-tional on the retirement to private life of General Francisco Villa. In offering to resign, General Carranza Car-ranza said he was actuated only by the highest motives of patriotism and that acceptance or rejection of his offer of-fer must depend on whether his elimination elimi-nation would contribute toward hastening has-tening peace in the republic and furtherance fur-therance of true democratic ideas. In discussing the tender of his resignation res-ignation by General Carranza, a high government official said: "General Villa has charged General Carranza with being a self-seeker who desired to take advantage of an accident acci-dent and perpetuate himself in power. General Carranza now shows his good faith to the world by declaring that if the personalities of himself and Villa are to be a check on peace and to democratic progress in Mexico they should both step down and out. As you Americans say, 'It is ow up to Mr. Villa.' The followers of General Carranza are willing to let history judge us by this act of disinterestedness disinterested-ness on his part, for we can make no greater sacrifice in the interest of peace and patriotism." |
