Garfield, from the balcony of the New York custom house, quieted a mob frenzied by the news of President Lincoln's assassination as-sassination by this brief and remarkable remark-able utterance: "Fellow Citizens: Clouds and darkness dark-ness are around him; his pavilion is dark waters and thick clouds; justice and judgment are the establishment of his throne, and truth shall go before be-fore his face! "Fellow Citizens: God reigns and the government at Washington lives!" |
