Show WANTS SHIP IN THE POTOMAC l Navy League Seconds a Suggestion That the Constellation Be Brought to Washington. Indorsement of the navy department recommendation that the famous old 'ship Constellation be moored in the Potomac river, off Potomac park, was given in a statement issued the other day by the Navy League of the United States, from the office of its secretary. secre-tary. The Constellation, which was one of the first ships of the American navy, and whose name will probably be linked forever with the British Guerriere, because of the hand-to-hand death grapple of the two ships, now lies off Newport, but there Is a strong sentiment favorable to bringing her here. The Navy league claims no originality original-ity in the matter, and the statement quotes Rear Admiral Victor Blue, chief of the bureau of navigation, who in his last annual report, submitted to the secretary of the navy, a statement state-ment as follows: "It is recommended that the frlgata Constellation, now at the navy training train-ing station, Newport, R. I., or the j Constitution, now at the navy- yard, Boston, Mass., and which was re-j re-j paired in accordance with the act ot 1 consrress approved June 29, 1906, pro-j pro-j viding $100,000 to restore her as far as practicable to her original condi-j condi-j tion, be brought to Washington and anchored in the Potomac river just off j Potomac park. Should the Constella-J Constella-J tion or the Constitution be brought t to the national capital and made ac-, ac-, cessible to the tourists who are con-; con-; stantly arriving from all points in the i country, it Is believed It would ifreate a greater national interest in the new I navy and be a means of instilling a greater patriotism in the mind of the younger generation." |
