Calumet, Mich. .More than eighty lit rsons, mostly children, were killed Wednesday night at a Christmas celebration cele-bration held by copper mine strikers in Italian hall because of a needless panic caused by a false alarm of fire. While several hundred miners and their wives looked on and scores of jchildren pressed eagerly towards the stage to receive Christmas presents, a man stuck his head in at the door ,of the hall and yelled "Fire." The cry was taken up at once by .those in the hall. Everyone sprang (up and started for the doors. The :weaker persons were thrown to the door and those behind tried to climb over the human barrier. In a few minute!, the panic was stopped by the fact that the stairway and the other avenues of egress were blocked sc effectively that those inside could not get out and those without could not get In to aid the maimed and re move the dead, The alarm was spread outside th hall by a few person who had been .v.. , ..... . I near the door and escaped unhurt A crowd soon assembled and the work jof clearing the hall was begun. The only regular exit was a narrow stairway at the back of the hall. Wher this had been cleared of the bodies !lt was found that seventy-four corpses had been laid in a row beside the hall building. It was thought thai probably a dozen more had been car-Tied car-Tied away by friends. The dead included thirty-seven girls, nineteen boys, thirteen women jand five men. Excited relatives stood 'about the butlding, some dazed by the sudden change from holiday festivities festivi-ties to tragedy, others calling hyster ically for a missing child and a few .even threatening violence to the res jcuers for keeping them from the long tow of bodies. |
