Show Pessimistic Deacon Philander. Deacon Philander of our church is so practical that at times he appears to be profane, says the Kansas City Star. Our minister, a very modest and well meaning man, approached Philander the other day and said: "Brother Philander, we are to be congratulated. con-gratulated. Of course you noticed what an immense congregation we had at our special services the other evening. eve-ning. I am told that at the opera house there was a very small crowd out to Bee the show.' The interest in our work Is certainly increasing wonderfully. won-derfully. "Yes," replied' old Philander, Philan-der, very solemnly; "I noticed the things of which you speak, but I much fear that things would be different if we charged a dollar admission and the show at the opera house was free."
