"Its people are affected af-fected as vitally as those of the heavily-populated coastal areas, even though the menace is not on tho doorstep, as it Is on the Atlantic At-lantic and Pacific seaboards." In Utah to assist Legion organizations organ-izations and civic leaders in distribution dis-tribution of Americanism literature, litera-ture, Mr. Sawyer said the program Is expected to reach into nearly 10,000,000 homes. He described the effort as the legion's "first attempt at-tempt to make a positive attack on communism." "The American Legion started this program because we know that for the most part the people of the United States don't realize we're at war with Russia and communism," he said. "It's a 'cold' war, and most Americans can't understand anything but a hot I war. Tho legion Is disturbed, as are government and Industrial leaders In the east. The CommunlHt Com-munlHt menace is closer and stronger than we think." Mr. Sawyer, a native of Mesa, Ariz., said the campaign primarily is directed at "people who don't read much." These, he said, Include In-clude those who are satisfied with reading headlines and comic strips. "Out here In the west," he asserted, as-serted, "the people aren't tense and worried about the current threat to our democracy. They're not talking about it as people are In the coastal areas."
