Show Not So Clever, These Chinese The Chinese reds have finally decided to deport Angus Ward, U.S. consul general at Mukden, and members of his staff, who have been under arrest for the past .month on a charge of abusing a Chinese employe. This will no doubt quiet the national commander of one of the veterans organizations who was all for getting World War III started with a big bang in the form an ar. expeditionary force to rescue Ward. It hasn't, however, quieted several Republican congressmen con-gressmen who have been on Secretary Acheson's neck for the manner in which he handled the incident. They don't think he was tough enough. They think he acted without honor when he appealed to 30 other nations to bring pressure pres-sure on the Chinese comnfunists for the release of Ward and his associates. We beg to disagree vith the gentlemen from Congress. We think Mr. Acheson's appeal was most honorable and approximately 100 per cent smarter than falling for the bait set by Reds by their arrest of Ward. They obviously hoped to induce the United States to resort to war-like force, the same to lend credence to their propaganda that we are a nation of imperialistic warmongers. Instead, Mr. Acheson set an honorable example of how one nation should conduct its affairs in a community of nations. na-tions. He stated frankly that the charges against Ward were trumped up. This being so, he felt it right to call upon the other nations of the world to join with the United States in giving severe disapproval of the Chinese Reds' highhanded tactics. Eventhough a threat of force by the United States in this case may not have led to a war, we still prefer Mr. Acheson's methods. If mankind is ever to be led away from the road to war, it will be by those who weld the nations of the world into a union. A union, as we have said before, strong enough to contain and bring into line any' nation which refuses to abide by the house rules. |
