Show Aid Offered Farmers And Stockmen Hit By Operations Cost In Winter j The disaster loan legislation ; sponsored by Utah's Congressman Congress-man Walter K. Granger was signed by the President on April 6, 1949, and is now known as Public Law No. 3S, according to word received from the representatives repre-sentatives office this week. Under the provisions of the Granger Bill the Secretary of Agriculture has been given the power to make emergency loans direct to farmers and stockmen who are located in an area where the forces of nature have caused an agricultural production disaster. dis-aster. This legislation will prove to be important to a number num-ber of livestock producers in Utah where they have been hard hit by the recent winter blizzards, bliz-zards, according to Representative Representa-tive Granger. It is realized that total losses cannot be estimated until after the lambing season has passed this spring, but undoubtedly un-doubtedly many stockmen are hard pressed financially because be-cause of the high operation costs they encountered during . recent heavy storms and excessive feed bills due to heavy supplemental winter feeding, it was said. It is probable that the credit needs of stockmen resulting from winter losses may be too heavy for private lending agencies, agen-cies, and so the stockmen will welcome the news that the necessary nec-essary machinery for emergency loans is now being set up by the Farmers Home Administration, Administra-tion, under the provisions of the Granger Bill, Representative Granger stated. Every effort is being made to have each local office of the Farmers Home Administration ready to accept these emergency loan applications by April 18. The local office which will serve the Sanpete area is located at Manti City Hall, Manti, and is under the direction of County Supervisor Benjamin F. Hulme. Farmers will also be interested inter-ested in knowing that another important problem receivng the attention of Congressman Granger Gran-ger is the matter of disaster in- I surance for livestock. There is no commercial insurance company com-pany on the North American continent which will write disaster dis-aster insurance for livestock generally, it was claimed. In view of this fact, Congressman Granger is now sponsoring legislation legis-lation which will authorize for breeding and feeder livestock in the west, he said. If this study-should study-should indicate that such insurance in-surance is desirable then Congressman Con-gressman Granger has indicated he will sponsor the enactment of legislation which will provide such insurance for livestock. |
