Show Weevil At Work on Alfalfa Fields An examination of alfalfa fields in several parts of the county indicate that alfalfa weevil are beginning to work in these fields. Last year approximately one-third one-third of the first crop of alfalfa was destroyed because of weevil. Weevil can be controlled if proper measures are applied at the right time. Since the alfalfa is not yet ready to cut in most areas, it is recommended that Calcium Arsenate Ar-senate dust be applied on these fields as soon as alfalfa weevil begin to work. This Calcium Arsenate dust should be aplied at the rate of 21" to 3 pounds per acre, and it may be mixed with an equal amount of dusting Sulphur for effective results. re-sults. The important thing is get-tingg get-tingg the dust on early in order to kill young weevil larvae before they do considerable damage to the alfalfa plants. In several parts of the ' county last year, fields that were dusted early produced one to one and cne-half ton of hay more per acre than the fields that were dusted too late. The dusting machines should be shut off when the end of the field is reached before the machine ma-chine is turned around to go up another swath, and when completing com-pleting the field, going up and down the same, the duster might be run across the two ends in order to complete the job. Handling the machine in this manner will prevent the accumulation accumu-lation of Calcium Arsenate in small spots and thus eliminate poisoning. |
