Show Need A Few Martyrs There is a nation-wide protest a-gainst a-gainst the kidnaping racket. Citizens Citi-zens are indignant that life and security se-curity are being menaced by thugs, fearless of law and authority, who demand money as the ransom for men, women, and even children. Plans are suggested for a national police system, in order that a uniform uni-form authority may be in existence throughout the land to immediately follow up kidnappings, recapture the victim, and punish the guilty, However, this system, as well as any other, will be handicapped by the natural desire of parents and loved ones to recover the possession of their kin without injury. The plain, blunt, cruel way to end kidnaping is to refuse to pay the ransoms. Dr. Carleton Simon, New York crimlnoligist, Is correct when he points out this method. The welfare of the individual must be subordinated to the benefit of society, so-ciety, therefore, if necessary, a few martyrs might be needed before the kidnaping racket can be ended. That remedy is -sure and certain. Kidnapers operate to collect huge sums of money as ransoms. If they begin to find out that these funds will not be paid, they will have no incentive to kidnap. The cure for the evil may be heartless, apparently, appar-ently, but isn't it better than to allow an endless number of victims to suffer, some of whom, like the Lindberg baby, die anyway? |
