Show The Constitution Tho people of our fair land have, been, intertitcd, in recent discussion of the Supreme Court's decision in regard to th:i NBA and have been hearing suggestions that the Constitution Consti-tution be ama.ided in order to give to the1 Federal govrnrr.lent undisputed undis-puted power to d:ttl with social and econcm.c questions. Ina much ac he issue will no doubt be directly b. fore us in the next fw years it might be well to understand a few things about th Constitution, the Courts and the government. The right to amend the document of cur lib.rty is as valukibla as the instrument Itself and no founder of our government ever intend: i to deny to the p.oplo that privilege. It is the function of th; Supr:me Court to interpret the Constitution and apply it hi relation to new laws. That this was done in thJi NRA ca. e canntt be doubted, nor does cjiy p rson have the right to assail the judge: because of tto.-ir interpretation inter-pretation of interstate commerce. It is, none the less, the right of the Pi-esidcl.it, or cf any political group in this country, to propo e amendments ts the Const tuticn, and no one has ar.y particular ground for crttism when ;uch a-inendm a-inendm nts are proposed. The sanctity of the Ccn titution is acknowledged ac-knowledged when eha tge is popos'd through constitutionally provided methods. It is, la'Uy, the right of the people peo-ple of the United States, acting n; piovided by law to amend, abolish or alter their Ccnst'tution. Whenever When-ever the requirt-d number of citizens of this r. public believes that their yelfare would be better safeguarded safe-guarded by such changes it is their right to act and no one should criticise or attempt to abridge th.it right which is of vital importance. The Constitutio.ii is a groat document docu-ment of liberty only long as it serves human needs and wh never it fails to do so reform is imperative. In this diecussion we take no po ition in regard to the coming battle over widening the powers of the Federal government. Th-js; who believe in the Constitution will be divided on the two sides cf the debate; those who are against the Constitution will be advocating something besides a ccn tituticnal amendment. |
