Personal Paragraphs Of Interest Friend and Neighbor LeRoy W. Irish came in at noon and dispelled the clouds of blue Monday. As long as he lives it will never be said of us or him that we do not have a friend. Mr. Irish is a student and has gathered a goodly store of information which he makes much use of. He's always tryi-ng to searth out new truth. Friend George Stokes brought his' good wife in and we were glad to meet her as she is an intelligent and cultured wom-an. She said: "Keep your guns loaded, Mr. Lund, and keep firing. What a pity you are not many years younger. The country needs you." Noah's Ark Found. Pamphlets An aged and respected citizen remarked: "I am old. I cannot work like I used to. I get $27 a month from the Welfare De partment and what a thrill I feel each time I get the clinch. I wouldn't give it up for anyone.' Dr. Edward McKay has been ' called ov;r seas with the medi cal corp. His wife, Lottie, has returned to reside with her pa-rents, Mr. and Mrs. Franc 8 L. Lund of Boise, Idaho Salt Lake Citv is the hom town of the nation's best woman for sale, 2 for 5c, plus 3c stamp many as you wish. Friend James E. Hart is feel-ing bad over the news that his granddaughter's husband, Lt. Col W. L Chamberlain, has been lost in the war. He was a prince of a man and was serving his country to the best of his ability. ( Miss Margaret Petersen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Petersen of Genterfield, is in Salt Lake taking treatment at one of the clinics here. Her mother accompanied her here, l Daniel Black was home from the Northwest recently visiting his wife and family He is doing important war work. Congratulations to Friend Hon. Wm. R. Wallace upon his having completed 25 years of service to the Boy Scout move-ment. He is now a veteran scout of the Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America. Mre. George W. Larsen is spending a week in Axtell visit-ing with her daughter Mrs. Jensen. All who have radios should listen every Saturday, 3:00 to 3:30 P. M., to the Union Paci fic's splendid feature, "Your America." It is both instructi-ve and entertaining. Demoerat, Mrs. Anna T. Piercy She is literally democracy per-sonified. Democratic political matters are not only doctrine to her but they are religion. She accepted the faith in the old days and has kept it flam-ing in her soul ever since. She has also been a missionary for cause and has several converts to her credit. A hundred De-mocrats like her would keep the state in the fold forever. We appreciate the support of this good woman Burgess 0. Gudmondson, son of Mr.and Mrs. O. F. Gudmon-so- n, has been home from the Aleutians on a thirty-da- y furl-ough visiting his wife and pa-rents. He feels fine and is doing well. Sam F. Kiefer reports that his son Warren has just enter-ed the armed forces and is on his way. H s daughter Betty is also serving as a commissio-ned nurse. So he is alone now on the home front firing line. Political Our studied prediction in re-gard to the Republication con-vention is that Dewey will not be nominated and that a man who leans more to isolation like Bricker or Taft or some dark horse will be nominated. Wilkie should be the man The GOP does not have a man who could and would do more to make peace and prevent war. in a valley that lies on the shore of a great lake they will grow, and will make a beautiful land, possess the old priest-hood, with Apostles, Prophets, Teachers and Deacons, etc. "From every nation will the true believers be gathered by speedy messengers, and then will the God Almighty speak to the disobedient with thunder and lightning and destruction such as never was heard of or known in history before, Amen." A RELIGIOUS PROPHESY (Published by request) A PROPHECY uttered by Lutius Graties in 1739 A.D. and published in his work "Hope of Zion" in the city of Basel, Switzerland, and may be read in the University Library of that t;me Qospei anc the gifts thereof are lost, false doctrines prevail in every church and in all the world. All that we can do is to exhort the people to be just, fear God, and shun evil, and pray, pray, pray. "Prayer and purity may cause an angel to visit a deep and distressed soul. "But I tell you that in one hundred years (jod will have spoken. I see a little band of people led by a prophet and faithful elders, persecuted, burned out, and muredered; but FAMOUS PERSONAGE TO GO THIS MONTH? The invasion of Europe was started at the 6th hour of the 6th day of the 6th month. Three sixes put together make 666, which is the number of the Beast. Now read Revelation, Chapter 13, verses 5, 16, 17, 18, and try to figure out what it means. One interpretation is that Hitler's time is up this month, and that a very critical stage of the war will come at the end of the month. GREATEST TRUTH OF ALL "We have never needed Christ more than we do today. Our civilization cannot do without him. Without him our civilization will wreck itself in some unimaginable bloody war, or in some hideously materialistic phase of machinery and vulgarity in which life will not be worth living." "HONEST" AND "BEAUTIFUL" FREE ENTERPRISE Forty loan corporations and 75 individuals operating more than 400 offices have been charged by the government with conspiracy. On small loans from $5 to $60 the interest ranged from 60 to 1000 per cent, and in the majority of cases averaged 120 per cent to 240 per cent. This is from a govern-ment record. O greed, where is thy limit? WE PLEAD FOR THE CHILDREN The many children of the men and women condemned for polygamy are now due for just and Christian considera-tion by the people of this community. They are fine children, healthy and intelligent, as fair specimens as can be found anywhere and will compare very favorably with all other children. There is no other course left open to professed follower sof Jesus than to love them and respect them, keep the schools and churches open to them, and to help them i in all the ways they can. "In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these ... ye have done it unto me." The President Sends Us Personal Thanks After reading our editorial ' Those Hp Agonizes For Hurl the Contumelious Stone,'" in the issue of May 19, I94i, Presi dent Franklin D. Roosevelt sent the editor his personal thank and appreciation together with a late picture of himself. The editorial was sent to him by our Friend George Stokes of cago. We are pleased and happy over this and we have put the picture, the letter and the editorial in a frame and hung it above our desk w ere all who come may see. Thanks, Mr President, and Bon Voyage as you carry into the unlocked future the Ark of Covenant with Destiny. Every eye on this planet is upon you, and a billion souls are praying that you keep true to the inspired vision given to you in the days of the country's sorrow and suffering. God bless you. PeronaL . Friend Bert Snioot, Salt Lake's genial and efficient post-master will be in for a raise shortly. The enormous busi-ness handled during war time merits it, and he can easily find a place for the extra dollars Neighbor J. H. Keate at 85 can slill go a few rounds in a boxing contest. In his younger days he met all comers in his weight division. It is good to see him fighting the battle of life so well at his advanced agej CANT UNITE EVEN ON PRAYER We are indeed a peculiar people. We! could not unite even on the matter of prayer. One local rock-ribbe- d reaction-ary sSid, "The President's prayer was just yvords." Another, a man who pins his faith to "dollars of destiny" more than he does to prayers said, "It was a good stump speech." Strange, the same was said of the Sermon on the Mount. They will praise the Hotentot for mumbling a "prayer" to an unknown power, and call an Indian religious because he ; mumbles words to the great spirit. But they have not vision to recognize the president as Christian and sincere in leading his people in prayer on one of the most momentous occasions in history. Too busy garnishing the sepuldhre of the dead leaders while stoning the living. Kind Readers', Substriptions and Contribu-tion- s will help to preach the Economic Gospel Voters, Know Your Man. i - ; j I all the people. In the fight against power monopoly and unfair rates he has been in the front ranks. At this very time he is making the people's fight against the proposed sale of the Traction lines. He has shown that if the proposed sale is made for $675,000 it would ap-parently be giving away the property to some source not revealed, and prove a detri-ment to the Power company's preferred stockholders. At the price named it would be a ridiculous giveaway. He says ! the sale should be made to the I highest bidder, in a wide open field. If there is to be prefer-enc- e it should be to a home concern. Because of past troubles with Bond and Share companies, Mr. Elggren would prefer local ownership, having the utilities owned by Utah people. Where the ownership is vested in a foreign holding company, as proposed, then the LOCAL board of directors would become mere rubber stamps f for the holding company. As he has been the people's champion and advocate in this matter, so would he be in every fight where the people needed a champion and an advocate. He not only promises an honest deal to every one, but proves by his character that as a pub-lic servant he could not act otherwise. He will make an ideal state senator. L. E. ELGGREN Candidate for State Senator An able, outstanding citizen, as Democrat and a dependable liberal and progressive, safe and sound, has been approach-ed many times and asked to run for ofice, but declined. This year, however, he has been per-suaded to make the effort in the interest of the public. Friends vouch for him and re-commend him to the voters as the kind of a man needed in ',the Utah state senate. He is a businessman but interested in WOODROW WILSON ON MOB RULE "No man who loves America," President Wilson said, "no man who really cares for her fame i and honor and character, or who" is truly loyal to her institutions, can justify mob action while the courts of justice are open and the government of the states and the nation are ready and able to do their duty. "We proudly clai mto be the champions of democracy. If we really are, in deed and in truth, let us see to it that we do not discredit our own. I say plainly that every American who takes part in the action of a mob or gives it any sort of countenance is no true son of this democracy, but its betrayer, and does more to discredit her bv that single disloyalty to her standards of law and of right than the words of her statesmen or the sacrifices of her heroic boys in the trenches can do to make suffering peoples believe her to be their savior." No truer or more appropriate words could be spoken in the great crisis which faces our democratic way of life today! Terry and the Pirates By Milton Caniff TWLL I HAVE ENOUeHVj! f CAS?... ENOUGH OIL? One man puts forth ordinary efforts and achieves great success, and another may put forth efforts equally strong and fail in every particular by the standards of men, and the short-visione- d human critic elevates one to the throne of honor and relegates the other to the depths of degradation. But God knows and judges in justice. There are drunkards in the ditch, criminals in the peni-tentiary, and courtesans in the brothels, who are immeasur-ably higher in the sight of God than some of the juries and judges and the white-washe- d men and women who have still about them the cloak of respectability, and who were the instruments by which these failures in life have been consigned to their filthy prisons. Oh, the sham and shoddy of modern respectability! If half of the secret cor-ruption of respectable society could be revealed then the hideous glare of Red light districts would pale into insignificance." Selected. COULD WE DO AS WELL? Friend George Manwaring sends the following item. When Emperor Haile Selaise sent the order out the Italians were coming to annihilate his people and they almost did just that. Would we in the U. S. do as much if our people were in as much danger as were the Ethiopians? Editor Progressive Opinion: When the Italians invaded Abyssinia the following order was promulgated by Emperor Haile Selassie: "When this order is received, all men and all boys able to carry a spear will go to Addis Ababa. Every married man will bring his wife to cook and wash for him. Every unmarried man will bring any unmarried woman he can find to wash and cook for him. Women with babies, the blind, and those too aged or infirm to carry a spear are excused. Anyone found at home after receiving this order will be hanged." From an address by Admiral Harold R. Stark.
