Show BENEFIT SHOULD BE HAD FROM THE NEW JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. k Statistics show thnt only one child out of fourteen four-teen in our school systems over reach tho high Bchool. Ninety per cent of American children must acquire their educntion before they nro fourteen years old. This year an effort is being mndo in Utah to remedy this situation somewhat some-what by shortening tho terms of elementary and grammar school studies and introducing studies that formerly were exclusively part of tho high school curriculum. Years ngo it was thought that it took tho nv-erago nv-erago child eight years to learn arithmetic, rending, rend-ing, writing, spelling nnd n Binnttering of history his-tory nnd geography. This idea has been thrown to tho disenrd, liowcver, for it hns been fouml that the elements of these studies can be learned in less than half that time. Tho "three R's" nro learned in tho elementnry grades. Considering thnt so grenf a proportion of children quit school after the grammar years have been pnssed, it is extremely worth whilo that tho grammar school system bo bettered. Employers complnin that children coming to them from tho public schools nro frequently unprepared un-prepared in tho very elements of education-flimsy education-flimsy information, inability to writo or spell or figure accurately, and bad memories. Tho facts are, however, that these elements wcro learned in the first yenrs at school, but a leakage has como in tho Inter yenrs. But tilings nro moving rapidly. Educators have felt tho sting of business men's criticisms to advantage, and every year tho grammar school child is being turned out with n moro orkablo educntion. Considering the disparity between numbers, this iu of moro importance to tho state than super-excellent high schools. Tho education th& gets down to all tho people Is the education that raises all the people. |
