Show THE PROPER ATTITUDE OF THE FOREIGN BORN CITIZEN. Gcorgo W. Beckel, secretary of the Brooklyn Germnnia, is an American whose citizenship is not to be questioned. Lately he wrote a letter, which appears in tho Christian Science Monitor, doctoring that German-Americans should renounce re-nounce their allegiance to their former country or renounce their United Stntcs citizenship. He Is oubpoken nnd says: "1 wuuld like to take this opportunity of expressing my pursuimt lewa on the uttltmtu of n grrut many Herman-Americans to you. Our constitution Is wry clear on the point of cltlienshlp and the oath administered to foreigners who become United States cltltens Includes that they absolutely renounce their nlleglanco to their former country and swear nlleglanco to the United States flag, which means that they must support the United States flag whether the same Is right or wrong In their estlmutlon. They should do this especially In such critical crit-ical IIiiich ns wo have been having for the past year. If they cannot consistently do so there ' only one way open to them to renounce their United States rltlxenshlp, otherwise they are committing high treason. There ure no two ways out about this matter." |
