Show Washington, D. C, newspapers of last Saturday Satur-day print interviews with Gov. Willlnm Spry of Utah quoting him ns saying: "Tho republicans of the Western Stntcs nrc beginning to express preference for candidates. My personal choice is Ellhu Root. lie would mnko the strongest nnd the best enndidnte the republicans could name, In my judgment. Scnntor Weeks has much strength in some Western Stntcs. So have Senators Sen-ators Cummins and Burton. Senator Borah is our neighbor and wc like him, but I do not believe be-lieve the pnrty will go for a enndidnte in a state so small and unimportant politically us Idaho. While tho whole country Is behind the president in his negotiations with the belligerent nations of Europe, I do not tnko the view that this means the democrats will win n victory next year. I do not believe tho European wnr will ovcrshndow all other Ifsiics in this country. If tho wnr should end, it is a certainty, in my opinion, thnt the republicans re-publicans would win. And even should tho wnr continue wo shall ho protected by an adequate tariff. Tho people nro thinking more than over about a tariff now. Had it not been for the European war the low tariff enacted by the democratic pnrty would have caused n serious business depression throughout uie count 'y. Fortunntcly for us, tho war has helped business." |
