Killed in Auto Accident Last Friday in Lehi respect to the memory ot one of this community's highly honored citizens Neils Fugal and express sympathy and appreciation for his family. Continued on page 3 Niels Fugal, 73, prominent civic civ-ic and church leader and businessman busi-nessman of Pleasant Grove was killed almost instantly last Friday Fri-day night in .an automobile accident ac-cident at approximately 9:20 p.m. The tragedy oocurred at the intersection in-tersection of Highway 91 and a sideroad just west of the Lehi secondary highway. According to State Highway patrolman Lawrence Clark, Prove Pro-ve who was the first officer on the scene, eyewitnesses reported that Mr. Fugal had started to drive west on the side road. For some reason he changed his mind and decided to continue along Highway 91. While backing back-ing his late model sedan back on the main highway his car was struck by a north-bound truck driven by Ray S. ParH, 62, of South Granger. Both drivers driv-ers were alone in their respective vehicles at the time of the accident. ac-cident. Mr. Park was not injured. in-jured. Mr. Fugal received severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the American Amer-ican Fork Hospital. Niels Fugal was bom in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove, ' Sept. 14, 1885, the son of Andreas and. Hannah Oar-leson Oar-leson Fugal and . haa. lived here all of his life. He married Viola Young Aug. 12, 1908 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was educated in the local schools and has engaged in farming, farm-ing, plumbing and contracting business. For his entire life he has been active in church and civic affairs. af-fairs. He has served as a stat legislator, member of the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove Oity Council and in numerous positions for the LDS Church. He has been a member of the board of education of the Alpine School District for the past four years, serving as President Presi-dent at the time of his death. They were followed, by a sketch of the busy, useful life of Mr. Fugal, was given by a granddaughter grand-daughter Janiel Fugal. Speakers were Alton Sorenson, of Caldwell, Richardson & Sorenson, Soren-son, Engineering firm with whom Mr. Fugal was closely associated, associa-ted, who paid tribute to the deceased de-ceased as a business man, his honest and dependability. Christianson, life-long neighbor and friend, spoke more intimately of childhood child-hood days, of missionary days and sweet home life of the Fugal family. Alma Burton, Superintendent Superin-tendent of Alpine School District, spoke highly of Mr. Fugal as President of the school board. He paid tribute to Mr. Fugal as a man who always stook true for his convictions. He also paid a fine tribute to Mrs. Fugal. Musical numbers interspersing the spealiers were a vocal 'solo In My Fathers House, by Loile Bailey, accompanied by Mrs. Bailey, and an organ solo O My Father by Anne W. McCausland, a grand daughter. The concluding number was by Mr. Bailey who accompanied by Mrs. Bailey sang Thy Will Be Done. Family prayer, prior to the church service was offered by Ernest Clayton, a nephew. Prelude and background organ music was played by Judy West, Janiel Fugal and Lois Fugal, grand daughters. Benediotion was pronounced by H. V. Swenson, patriarch of Timpanogos Stake. Bryan Fugal a nephew, offered offer-ed the dedicational prayer 'at the f amily plot in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery, where burial dir-eoted dir-eoted by Olpin-Sundberg Mortuary Mortu-ary took place. Pallbearers were sons in law, Porter Gooch, Vance West, Robert Rob-ert Holdaway, Glen Turner, Kent Giles and grandsons Vance Joel West, David Holdaway and Douglas Turner. Third Ward Relief Society cared car-ed for the many beautiful floral offerings, and the lunch, following follow-ing at the Neil Fugal home. Survivors include his widow; three sons and five daughters, Neil Y. Fugal; Boyd L. Fugal; Grant K. Fugal; Mrs. Vance (Avis) West; Mrs. Robert (Edna) Holdaway, all of Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove; Mrs. P. M. (Melba) Gooch, Harrisville, Weber Co.; Mrs. Glen (Lucille) Turner, Springville; Mrs. Kent (Joyce) Giles, Midvale; 48 grandchildren; six great-grand children. Chris Fugal, a brother, also survives. |
