Show Bennett Asks Funds To Improve Utah Forest Highways Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (B-lltah) (B-lltah) has a'iked for funds to im-rove im-rove forrat highways, including '135 miles of "critically deficient" roaiis in Utah. In testimony presented to tho Senate Committee on Public Works Sen. Bennett noted that although "the amendment which I sponsored in 195R raised Utah's annual share of forest highway funds from about $750,000 to $1. million, it is all too apparent that at the present rate it -would take 25 years just to meet tho out-dated estimate of critical needs." The Utah Senator pointed out that in 1945 about 10 million people used national foresls for recreational recrea-tional purposes. By last year, the number had Increased to 55 million. mil-lion. "Not only does this vast increase in-crease severely (tax the available recreational facilities, but it also puts a tremendous strain on the forest highway system," he said. Earlier, Sen. Bennett had asked Director of the Bureau of the Bud get Perclval Brundage to reloas-3 mare than $1 million previously appropriated for forest roads in Utah. Those funds were frojien by the Bureau last November, the etnator noted, pointing out that the economic pioture has changed ntnoo then and that use of the funds could be a stimulus to the economy as well as providing badly bad-ly needed improvement for forest highways. |
