Show Banquet Monday Honors P.G. Vikings, Coaches Are Speakers Coach Stan Watts of the BYU and Coach Jack Gardner of the U of U wsire the principal speakers speak-ers Monday night when the Chamber of Commerce and Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove City gave a testimonial testimon-ial dinner for Pleasant Grove's Championship Basketball team. Coach Watts emphasized the need for every student to have an interest in an activity of his "" "--own- choosing. Although some think we have too much activity, his theory was that if the students stu-dents did have an activity there would be fewer "drop outs" before be-fore graduation. He commended, as did Coach Gardner, the coaches, coach-es, school staff, and citizens for their interest in youth. He said, "a team is only as strong as the community." Maron Oveson, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, welcomed guests and conducted the meeting. Then he turned the time over to Dan Peterson, school superintendent, who paid tribute to A. J. Rogers, high school principal, prin-cipal, who is seriously ill and could not attend the banquet. Grant Ingorsoll, assistant principal, prin-cipal, made comment and thanks to Coaches Don Crump, John Gourley, Lee Nichols, and Guy Hillman for their splendid work. Elaborating on the good sportsmanship sports-manship of the boys, Don Crump pointed out their outstanding conduct con-duct around school. He also thanked the citizens of the community. com-munity. Later in the evening, luminescing lumines-cing of the beginning of basketball basket-ball in Pleasant Grove was discussed dis-cussed by Junius A. West. It was first organized in Pleasant Grove in 1906. Following an entertaining program, pro-gram, the group enjoyed the film of the championship game between be-tween Pleasant Grove and Gunnison. Gun-nison. Committee members responsible respon-sible for making the banquet a success were Hal Haycock, Gerald Ger-ald Klemm and Maron Oveson. |
