Jki story W . rJ P.J -y-k A little world in itself a strange world where there is no room for the female of any species is Holy Mount Athos, a narrow nar-row peninsula 28 miles long that sticks out like a pointing finger into the blue waters of the Aegean sea. Time marches on here as it does in the rest of the universe. But progress stood still nearly a thousand thou-sand years ago. Today some 2,000 monks of the Greek Orthodox Church follow the same way of life that was followed by their predecessors in 972. The black-robed monk above is the monastery doctor. The Lavra monastery, oldest in Athos, is in the b a c k -ground. Q A beardless monk and his donkey (above) stroll through a street of Karyes, capital of the monastic republic. Autonomy was granted to the monks by the Emperors of Byzantium. It has been respected by all Greek rulers to this day. Visitors are welcome to Karyes as long as they are male. Not even a female animal is permitted within the boundaries of the republic. 1 Tj--t-?j i i 't:k1 V 3 f ' , i - tr 1 " 1 . . rs, ? t , - ' v 1 ; -1 ; V "V r" Iff V V s!-! He came to Athos early this century and doesn't know what an automobile looks like, but he has seen those "huge steel monsters called airplanes" which sometimes fly over Athos. Q A hermit (above) of Athos takes over the washday wash-day chores in this world without women. The men of the republic have a choice between entering enter-ing the monastery or becoming be-coming hermits. Monks at right prepare their nets for shallow-water fishing. The life of peace and tranquility tranquili-ty on Athos is clearly perceived per-ceived in the view below of the harbor of Lavra monastery. In the rowboat, two monks are setting out on an early morning fishing fish-ing party. Tvmt t"! va t"t(? - - - I n v vw- t j, ; " jj - - v v iff - .. , rft;?H I - " - - 4 |
