Presenting Pres-enting the trophy is YMMIA Counselor Coun-selor Jess Broadbent while Miss Shirley Jones, Salt Lake City young lady who was sponsor for the team during the four day meet looks on. Background shows Garth Walker Walk-er and Leo Carter viewing the presentation and doubtless wishing wish-ing they were getting the slightly larger trophy shown in right foreground, fore-ground, presented to Brigham City Fourth for winning first place. ' ' 3 ;. - - i ' K S " i " ' - - v ' I I f - " j A will to win plus plenty of fight and determination carried the Pleasant Grove First ward M-Men basketball team within two points of winning the biggest tourney in the world last week, when they came out on the short end of a 24-22 score in the finals of the Church tournament, against Brigham City Fourth ward. Entering the tournament as a very dark horse entry, and conceded little chance to win by anyone but themselves, they walked to three victories in a row, knocking off Studio City, California entry, 40-35; Edgehill, of Salt Lake City, a pre-tourney favorite, 30-28, and Logan 40-30, to gain the finals. Individual honors won during the tourney included winning of an All Church berth by Udell Westover, Pleasant Grove forward, second team position by Garth Walker, and honorable mention, Lowell Gillman and Howard Walker. In addition, Garth Walker received a wrist watch from the Deseret News for outstanding player of the day for', his work against Edgehill in the second days play. Perhaps the least mentioned man on the P. G. .roster was rhe coach, Glen Gilbert. Climaxing four years of coaching the First ward teams, Glen finally reached the coveted goal and is certainly to be congratulated on building a fine team, on carrying them along as far as they went, and in bringing this recognition to Pleasant Grove, Timpanogos Stake and the First ward. |
