Show Structural Mill Closes At Geneva Steel Operations In the Geneva structural mill, constituting one of the units in the government-owned government-owned steel plant at Geneva, Utah, now operated for the government gov-ernment by Geneva Steel company, com-pany, a U. S. Steel subsidiary, were discontinued today because of the reduced needs by the various var-ious government agencies for the type of steel products produced in this particular mill. This action ac-tion has been taken at the direction direc-tion of Defense Plant corporation and the War Production Board. Walther Mathesius, president of Geneva Steel company, in making the announcement said: "The Geneva Steel plant was designed and built by United States Steel corporation at the request of the government to supply vitally needed steel plates and structural shapes for the government's west coast shipbuilding ship-building program. Since completion, com-pletion, the plant has been operated op-erated by Geneva Steel company for account of Defense Plant corporation. "Operations in the structural mill unit of the plant began on July 1, 1944. In the succeeding months, the major part of the structural mill's output comprised compris-ed structural shapes for west coast shipyards. Beginning in January, 1945, when the War Production Board placed greater emphasis on the production of shell steel, the structural mill was utilized for the rolling of shell steel billets as its major product. "Since victory in Europe, the government's need for shell steel billets and for structural shapes for ship construction has greatly lessened. Because of this changed chang-ed situation, it has now beriome necessary to discontinue operations opera-tions in the structural mill of the Geneva Steel plant. "Employment for structural mill employees affected by the closing down of this unit will be available in the plate mill and other departments at the Geneva plant which now require additional addi-tional manpower." |
