Show Harrington School News . The Fourth grade boys and girls had a fair Wednesday, October 5. They had fruits, vegetables, handwork, hand-work, flowers, relics, pets and art. Every boy and girl brought something. some-thing. They invited their parents and the boys and girls of the other rooms. ' They had a splendid display. dis-play. Louise Beck At a meeting of the First and Second grade teachers of the Alpine school district, held Monday afternoon after-noon at the Harrington building, two demonstrations were given by Second grade boys and girls under the direction of Miss Hutchings and Miss Parker. One was a demonstration of formal for-mal reading, by Miss Hutchings' group. It featured regular textbook reading. The story wyas developed by sentence, phrase, word, then sound. After the development work the children studied the story, and the elimination of finger pointing and lip movement was stressed. After the study period the children chil-dren read orally parts of the stories, in response to questions from the teacher. The other was a demonstration of informal reading, given by Miss Parker's group. The informal reading read-ing was correlated with science, music, numbers and literature. The phases of science taken up were: the seasons, the study of seeds, the study of ants, and the study of caterpillars. In connection with the study of w seeds, several charts showing the different kinds of seeds were on display; also seeds planted in different dif-ferent kinds of soil. In connection with the study of ants, an ant house with ants for the children to observe daily was on the science table. In connection with the study of caterpillars, their habits and spinning spin-ning of cocoons, many of the children chil-dren brought them into the classroom. class-room. , ,' |
