Show Principal of Basic English Basic English was devised by Dr. C. K. Ogden, the English psychologist, psycholo-gist, who believes that 850 words are sufficient for all ordinary purposes. His simplified language, called "Basic" "Ba-sic" (from British-American Scientific Scien-tific International Commercial) uses 600 nouns, 100 adjectives, 100 adjectival ad-jectival opposites, 30 verbs and the remainder participles. Most of the nouns used can be defined in not more than 10 words. In addition to its 850 words, Basic is free to take in international words that are universally uni-versally understood, such as coffee and tobacco. The literature of Basic Ba-sic is extensive, one of the most comprehensive textbooks being "The System of Basic English." |
