Show Scouts Celebrate 20th Anniversary In honor of the twentieth anniversary anni-versary of scouting in the L. D. S. church, Manila scouts and vanguards van-guards staged an unique bonfire celebration The M. Men in charge were Grant Atwood and Charles Warnick. They built a large cone-shaped cone-shaped bonfire on the schoolhouse hill where the members of the ward assembled to watch the main attraction on the mountain side. There the scouts and vanguards, under the direction of Scoutmasters, Scoutmas-ters, Glenn Iverson and Alex Wad-ley, Wad-ley, and Vanguard leader, Warnick Swenson, had constructed an immense im-mense S; 230 feet wide and 400 feet long. At 9 o'clock a salute of 20 charges of giant-powder was set off, a signal sig-nal for the huge letter to be lighted light-ed with torches in 62 cans of oil which burned until early Sunday morning. It has been reported that this letter of fire was seen from Spanish Fork, Prove and all of northern Utah county. Too much credit and honor cannot can-not be given those who conceived the plan and worked so hard to execute it. Some people got the mistaken idea that Pleasant Grove was staging the fiery S. to herald the coming of Strawberry Day. |
