Show First Gorernor of Tennenea John Sevier was the first governor gov-ernor of the state of Tennessee. He was a Virginian by birth, settled in the Watauga district, west of the Blue Ridge, In 1772, and was Influential In-fluential In securing the district's annexation to North Carolina. In 1783 North Carolina ceded Watauga Wa-tauga to the federal toverninent, nd Sevier set up the "State of Franklin" and became 1U governor. When North Carolina subsequently reclaimed the territory Sevier was arrested on a charge of "treason." but never prosecuted. In 1790 the state of Tennessee was established, and Sevier served as governor from 1790 till 1801 and again from 1803 till 1809. The Battle of Kind's Mountain was the sudden end of the Rrltish attempt to subdue the backwoodsmen of western North Carolina. Sevier, at the head of his Wautauga settlers, mnde the charge up the side of the mountain which Insured the American victory nd the annihilation of Ferguson's force of British and Tories.
