He is improving daily 'and will soon be back to normal health, j i I Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Dunkley and family, Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Dunkley and family of Salt Lake, Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Burriston of Huntington, Park, California, were dinner guests Sunday and spent the day here with Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Dunkley. The Sunshine committee of the First ward, consisting of Mesdamcs Ida xiaag, Jane Howe, Barbara Boley and Lib Makin arranged a Sunshine party which was given for Mrs. Iret-ta Iret-ta Thornton at her home Monday afternoon. A sketch of the life of Mrs. Thornton was read by her daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Peterson of Pleasant Grove. Singing and a short program provided amusement following which light refreshments ments were served. There were 26 present. Last Friday night about 11:30 o'clock Patriarch and Mrs. Warren B. Smith were aroused from their sleep by someone knocking upon the door and upon opening it they were greeted by Mrs. Smith's two daughters, daugh-ters, Mrs. Amos Rochwood and Mrs. Ike Stephens of Iona, Idaho, who had accompanied Professor and Mi's. Reese of Iona who were enroute to Provo. The ladies enjoyed the visit here with their mother and left for home Sunday afternoon, with the Reeses. The members of the adult class of the First ward M. I. A. were delightfully de-lightfully entertained last Saturday night by their class leaders, Mrs. Sadie Bromley and Terry Draper at the Bromley home. Mrs. Phylip Green led the group in community singing following which games of various kinds under the direction of Mrs. Wilson Cunningham were indulged in-dulged in. Dainty refreshments were served. There were thu-ty five present. pres-ent. Miss Eleanor Nicholes, sophomore at Brigham Young University, Provo, won honorable mention with a sketch design submitted in the Young American Designer's fashion contest for college girls, according to a recent notice received from Marshall Mar-shall Field and Co., sponsors of the contest. Miss Nicholes is the daugh-, daugh-, ter of Professor and Mrs. Joseph K. Nicholes of Provo, and she is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nicholes of this city. Her Mrs. Vern Chipman was hostess last Friday afternoon to sixteen lady friends, eight of whom were members mem-bers of the Lawata Club. Bridge was the main diversion, Mrs. David Taylor winning the club prize and Mrs. Norman B. Wing the guest prize. Late in the afternoon a delicious delic-ious lunch was served at the small tables. The club members present were Mesdames VI F. Houston, Glen Sykes, David Taylor, Howard Nicholes, Nich-oles, Chris Scott, E. H. Devey, Leo Van Wagoner and Harold Fox, and the special guests were Mesdames L. B. Adamson, Kenneth Noyes, Rulon Peterson, Norman B. The members of the Feallty club nave a "no hostess" party last Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Norman B. Wing. Bridge was played after which all prepared the lunch. A jolly time is the report of those attending. Mr. and Mrs. David Davis and Iaurenco Clyde made a trip out to the New Deal Minning and Milling Company in which Mr. Davis and A. W. Melvin Grant, who has played the "drums in The American Orchestra for the past three years, has left the orchestra because of his work ns a member of the state patrol department. de-partment. Howard Nelson, a member mem-ber of the -orchestra who has been playing the banjo is the new drummer drum-mer and Carl Bennett of this city has been added as banjo player. The new combination should work out very well as banjo duets can be featured fea-tured with these two splendid players. Master Keith Coddington, son of Mrs. Verla Coddington, is nursing a broken arm which he received while playing ball. Dr. and Mrs. V. F. Houston and family six-nt Sunday visiting at the Coddington ranch near Colton with Mrs. Thomas Coddington who is spending two weeks there. Mrs. Valdis Famsworth of San Francisco, California, visited her aunt, Mrs. Arthur Dye, here Sunday. Mrs. Farnsworth is spending the week in Lehi with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Fowler and returned return-ed home the last of the week. Mrs. John Berg entertained the 'Merrymakers Club last Friday after-noon after-noon at her home. Mrs. Smith came west by way of Arizona and visited in Pheonix, Arizona, Los Angeles and Berkley, California, before coming to Utah. She will visit in Cleveland, Ohio, enroute home. Mrs. Adair Bromley entertained the Variety Club at her home last Friday afternoon. The forepart of the afternoon was spent in listening to a review of the book "Two Together" To-gether" by Mrs. Wilson Cunningham, following which bridge was played, Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. George Moss winning the prizes. A delicious delic-ious lunch was served. Mrs. Phillip Greene and Mrs. Marion Greene were special guests. In honor of Mrs. Ren Anderson's birthday a party was given by her daughters at tire home of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Wells on Tuesday evening. Another of the series of lectures is scheduled for May 12th when the new state chairman chair-man of the Democratic state organization, organi-zation, Hugh B. Brown will be the speaker. Little Miss Nita Steiner, 2, daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Afton Steiner is recovering from the effects of severe scalp laceration and a smaller forehead fore-head wound inflicted by a German police dog with which she was playing play-ing in a neighbor's yard last week. The animal was put to death and the head sent to Salt Lake for examination examina-tion to determine whether the animal ani-mal had rabbies, but the report sent back indicated that bacteria was present in the specimen and hence no true report could be made. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Steward and daughter Phyllis arrived in American Fork the first of the week from the Hawaiian Islands where Mr. and Mrs. Stewart have labored as L. D. S. missionaries for the past three years. Mrs. Stewart was formerly Miss Myi-1 Storrs of this city and they are at the home of her parents, Bishop and Mrs. Joseph H. StoiTS for an indefinite visit. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart were called to labor from the Willshire ward, Hollywood stake, California. They spent two years on the island of Hawaii, in the city of Hilo and Mr. Stewart presided as district president of the East Hawaii District. They labored for two months on the island of Maui, spent six months at the L. D. S. temple on the island of Oahu, where they served serv-ed as guides to visitors and also worked in the temple. The rest of their mission term was spent in the city of Honolulu. They were released releas-ed on April 7 th and visited in Los Angeles enroute home. They report a most splendid mission and a deep regard for the people and their country. I Niles Chadwick is now on the improve im-prove after a seige of tonsilitis followed fol-lowed by quinsy which has kept him confined to his home for a week. Mrs. Jessie D. Gillespie, who is ill with heart trouble at the home of Mrs. John H. Davis, is somewhat better. bet-ter. Mrs. Gillespie was brought here from Duchesne last week. Mrs. R. W. Gardner and Jack Gardner of Salt Lake, and Mrs. Naomi Nao-mi Ferber of Los Angeles, spent Sunday Sun-day last here with Mrs. William H. Gardner. Janice, small daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Chadwick had her tonsils ton-sils removed Wednesday morning by Dr. Kenneth E. Noyes. She is recovering re-covering nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Anderson and son Harold and Miss Edith Thornton were in Salt Lake last Sunday -afternoon. Among other places visited was the airport where they viewed the m-coming mail planes. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Jones of Provo are the happy parents of a winsome daughter, born Sunday night. Mrs. Jones, formerly Miss Ruth Storrs of this city, and the new arrival are at the home of her parents, par-ents, Mayor and Mrs. W. S. Storrs here and are doing nicely. Mrs. J. H. Adams, mother of Mrs. G. S. Richards and Junius H. Adams of this city, died at her home In Pleasant Grove early Saturday morning. Funeral services were held in the Pleasant Grove tabernacle Tuesday at 2 p. m. and Interment was made in the Pleasant Grove cemetery. Among friends of the family from this city who attended the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Shelley, Mesdames Vern Walker, Wan-en Anderson, R-ay Ellison, Elli-son, Earl.Holmstead, Juseph Walton, L. B. Adamson, C. T. Jones, Glen Taylor, A. F. Gaisford Jr. Owen Humphries, C. E. Young, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hansen, Loe T. Hansen Han-sen and Ray Shelley, Mrs Wallace Larsen and Miss Thelma Larsen Mrs. Young and Mr. Shelley rendered render-ed vocal solos at the services and Mrs. Humphries was accompanist for them. |
