Mildred Smith speaks to local DUP members Daughters of the Battlecreek Camp of the Utah Pioneers met in the Garden Room at the City Rec- - ' reation Center April 10 for the monthly meeting with Ruth Bezzant conducting and invo- - cation given by Shirley Maugham. Pledge of Allegiance was given and secretary Mildred Sutch read the minutes. The daughters sang "Nearer, My God, to Thee" conducted by Jean Worthington with Maymetta Johnson as pianist. A very interesting life sketch was given by Mildred Smith who was born in Payson, Utah to Elias Francom and wife. She grew up in Provo along with her three brothers and three sis-ters. She was an "A" student throughout her grade school years, and attended BYU, majoring in home economics. As a girl she picked strawber- - ries for spending money to cele- - brate the 4th and 24th of July. She remembers the beautiful buttercups that grew wild along the ditch banks. She helped knit stockings for the soldiers during World War I and recalls the devastating flu epidemic after the war was over. She married Nyle Smith on Oct. 7, 1926 and was sealed by George F. Richards. The wedding reception washeld in the Alpine StakeTaber-nacle- . She and her family lived in Honolulu when it was attacked and bombed by the Japanese in 1941. Later, when the atomic bomb was dropped, everyone was thrilled to have an end of the war. She came and settled in Pleas-ant Grove in 1946. Lesson Leader, Dora Chris-tiansen, gave the lesson, "Graves Along the Pioneer Trail." Approxi-mately eighty thousand pioneers left their homes and crossed the plains en route to the Salt Lake Valley, seeking refuge and a place to build again. Trials and hardships were se-vere. It seems only the hardiest survived. Nearly six thousand men, women and children passed away before their journey's end. |
