Show Christmas play is well done By BARBARA CHRISTIANSEN "The Rented Christmas", currently cur-rently showing at Lindon's Valley Center Playhouse, brings together a comic approach to a touching story, and pulls it off so that even those who dislike the maudlin will enjoy the story. Rental shop owner Ann Weston (played by Cynthia Sorensen) doesn't think John Dale (Dean Miller) is serious when he asks to rent "a Christmas." She discovers that he is and works to fill the difficult order, which includes not only decorations and presents but a wife and five children. "It is a lonely man that tries to buy happiness," she says. How Ann overcomes the problems prob-lems she encounters is the basis of the heartwarming story. Directors Mel and Rosemarie Taylor planned the staging so that each audience member probably felt the show was meant for him. Dean Miller did well on the part of a successful but lonely businessman. business-man. Cynthia Sorensen's performance perform-ance as Ann was very believable. The five children were played by Jon Johnson, Marci Johnson, Martsy Maughan, Adam Maughan and Cory Maughan. Discussions between the kids were very realistic and all parents enjoyed the references to how much kids like to eat. The servants Martha and Briggs were played admirably by Karen Marshall and Ken Kump alternt-ing alternt-ing with Joseph Sorensen. Kump displayed just the perfect amount of dignity for a family butler. Having the audience participate in Christmas caroling and a visit from a special guest made everyone every-one feel a part of the evening. The show will run each Friday, Saturday and Monday at 8 p.m. until Dec. 18. Then it will be performed per-formed nightly until Dec. 23. For reservations, contact Jody Renstrom at 224-5310. |
