Jr. High plans 'Meet the Candidates ' night, other events noted By KALYN SECRETAN The Pleasant Grove PTA Council Coun-cil met at Grovecrest Elementary with a number of items on the agenda. President Elect Vicki Young conducted the meeting in the absence of Council President Miriam Tomlinson, who gave birth to a baby boy on Oct. 5. CarleneVeenker announced the "Meet the Candidates Night" for Pleasant Grove, Manila and Lin-don Lin-don areas will be held on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Jr. High Auditorium. Residents will have the opportunity to meet the candidates for State Senate, House of Representatives, County Commissioners Com-missioners and School District. Carolyn Smith announced Oct. 9-14 is Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Week originated with the Great Chicago Fire. She stated fires are on the increase throughout through-out the United States. Afire fighter dies every seven minutes. 53 percent per-cent of all fires are caused by juveniles. juve-niles. A workshop will be held on how to identify Juvenile Fire Starters Start-ers (JFS). The trend to be a JFS starts at ages five, six and seven but with all the free time many Junior High students are turning into J.F.S.'s. Tests have been given in the schools and the answers are shocking. shock-ing. Questions ask if youngsters play with fire, at what age and answers are given without the names placed on the test. If you have a problem in the home or school, contact the fire department and someone can talk to children who like to play with matches. Manila School piloted a program pro-gram last year where fire drills were scheduled for the year, teachers teach-ers had an opportunity to discuss fire drills with the students for about 15 minutes before the drill actually happened. Teachers feel comfortable with the yearly plan, they know when it will happen, the command center is set up outside and all the teachers report on their class. If the Principal Princi-pal decides to have a missing child, they are called to the office before the drill. The last fire drill was held in May where the Fire Department conducted a mock drill, the missing children were found and carried into the ambulance. A "Chief of the Day" will have the opportunity to ride the fire truck during Fire Prevention Week. Principal Maag advised the group to be careful what they say about Tax Initiatives. Tell the public we don't know the effects, there will be cuts. No decision has been made but we need to encourage encour-age people to vote. There was a very poor turnout in the last primary election. |
