Show Varsity girls lose on road, JV wins With only three Region Eignt games left to play, the Lady Vikings are in a "must win" situation as they seek top seeding in the state tournament tour-nament which will be played at Roy High School from Feb. 29 through Mar. 5. Against the Provo Bulldogs on Tuesday, it was a defensive struggle, with both teams applying excellent defense throughout, resulting in a low scoring ballgame, in which the defending 3A state champs, Provo, won by a score of 51-45. 51-45. The tough "D" seemed to force the Lady Vikings out of their usual style of play, causing numerous turnovers and limiting P.G.'s total number of attempted shots to 26. Coach Marie Bone called for the Lady Vikes to put on the press and they fought back from a 15 point deficit to trail by only one point with 6:29 left in the game. On Thursday, the blue and white team traveled to Vernal. In preparation Coach Bone and Coach Neresa Nielsen designed a new zone oerenselor the Ute's ti' 3" center, Julie Zielstra, as part of their game strategy. The frustration Julie Zielstra felt resulted in an "off" night and after the game she told the P.G. coaches that this was the best defense she had ever played against. The entire game was close, with the biggest difference not more than 3 or 4 points and the lead changing with every trip down the court. The score was tied seven times and both teams worked hard and kept the intensity all through the game. The Lady Vikings might have played their best game of the season. In fact, they worked together well as a team and gave 100 per cent effort. The difference came in the final few minutes of the game. With the score tied in the last miinute, a breakaway lay up off the out of bounds play gave the lead to the Utes and they were able to keep it by making their foul shots and the result was a 41-38 victory. Erin "was named as the Varsity Player of the Week. The coaches recognized Erin for both offensive and defensive play. Her total points for the week were 36 and she played tough defense on the inside. Plan now to watch the last few region games of the season. On Thursday, Feb. 18, the Lady Vikes will play at Timpview and the last home game will be next Tuesday, Feb. 23, against Spanish Fork. Junior Varsity Winning has become a habit for the Junior Varsity Lady Vikings as they added two more wins to their record, still undefeated in region play, 11-0. On Tuesday they topped the Provo Bulldogs. Spring Smith led the of- 1 fensive charge with 19 points and Joy Warner also scored in double figures with 13. On Thursday the long bus ride to Uintah didn't seem to daunt their spirit. Winning easily by a score of 48-32, every player contributed and the points were spread among the entire team with VaLynn Storey and Joy Warner on top with 9 each. |
