Main " I Pleasant ft Grove 0N nMm David Faux, Pharmacist Toothache Relief A toothache can occur at any time. If it occurs at night or during a trip, a dentist may not be readily available. Even if the pain is bearable and lasts only for a shor time, it could mean that a cavity or infection is present. So what can be done until a dentist can be seen? Avoid extremely hot, cold or sweet foods and beverages. Try using a warm water rinse. If there is no swelling, a mild pain reliever such as aspirin, acetaminophen or products containing these ingredients may decrease the intensity of the pain. Nonprescription products containing local anesthetics (e.g. benzocaine or eugenol) are also often useful in relieving pain. One recent study showed that better than 80 percent of those receiving a benzocaine gel ex-perienced some toothache pain relief immediately (within four minutes, on the average) following application of the gel to the area of pain. Pain relievers and local anesthetics may bring tem-porary relief but do not eliminate the need to see a dentist. Seeing a dentist is especially important if swelling or fever is also present. Waiting to see the dentist may result in un-necessary damage to the teeth. Kencraft, Inc. Jan.
