Show (" letters to V the editor j S Spa g Consider effort I to light 'G' i Editor: A recent anonymous letter was written to PGHS asking where our spirit and support of the football team was and asking that the "G" be lit for the championship football game. No one knows better than we teachers how hard the students work at the many academic and extra-curricular endeavors involved in-volved in high school life, and we support them repeatedly and wholeheartedly. All teams, whatever what-ever the activity whether academic or sport, who reach the championship champion-ship level should be supported by the town and studentbody with rallies, processions, attendance, andhonors includingthe lightingof the "G" whenever it is feasible. Because of this and other requests to light the "G" and criticism of not lighting the "G" for the football championship game, I feel many people don't know what needs to be done to light the "G." We are glad to light the "G" for Homecoming, graduation, Strawberry Days, but consider what you are asking on other occasions. The following will give people an idea of what this request entails. 1. The Key Club is responsible for lighting and repairing the "G." 2. At least six to eight strong people are needed. 3. They must leave before dark, which means missing the activity (football game, graduation etc.), to get the "G" completely set up in . daylight. 4. Two or three gallons of gas are carried up the trail, which is extremely ex-tremely steep and wet, muddy, and slippery in bad weather. Each 2 1 2 gal. can of gas weighs 20 lbs. 5. A 30 lb. battery, if the genera- to: has been winterized, i. 6. On a very steep slant ei ft cords,weigh,ng401b.,eacl1mm 2 held single-handed while anotfe handis stnngingitaroundthe'G' ! It is very difficult footing, J good weather. J" 7. Two hundred lightbulbsar, installed around the "G." 8. The generator is pulled outo! M storage, filled with gas, andhooktj t up to the cords. ' 9. The people must stay the entire time the "G" is lit in cast saj( something goes wrong or there is rror vandalism. This time of year it :ei would be a little bit cold to sit y around for four to five hours on mountain. 10. Around 11:30 p.m. all t jj) hundred lightbulbs must be unscrewed, un-screwed, the cords unstrunj wound up, then replaced in storage along with the generator. 1 11. Between 12:30 and l:00u they return down the mountain. In past years there have been a occasions when just one or two ' people have lit the "G," whitl m shows lack of support for the ftn ties we try to light it. If it hadrlt xi been for a few loyal boys, who ha since graduated, many times t wouldn't have been able to light it Before a criticism or request ii made, a person should consider ev whether under bad weather condi- m tions, in which injuries could occur, he would volunteer to help with ttit project or would want his son or daughter on the mountain under those conditions. Again we will do our best to light the "G" whenever conditions make it feasible. Sincerely, Jeri Craner Key Club Advisor |
