Show UP&L gives Christmas lighting tips The holiday season means most homes are festooned with decorations, the traditional Christmas tree and bright lights. UP&L safety specialists say Christmas tree lights should be inspected every year they are used. Lights also should be safety-certified safety-certified by a recognized testing agency such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The light strings should be inspected in-spected for cracked or loose bulb sockets; exposed wires or connections; con-nections; and frayed, broken or scorched insulation. Before decorating the tree, the light strings should be spread out on a non flammable surface and plugged in for 15 minutes to check for any signs of melting, smoking or overheating. over-heating. If these signs appear or wear is apparent, throw the string away. Above all, never put electric lights on a metal tree. If something goes wrong, a dangerous electric shock can result. An aluminum, or other reflecting metal tree, can be beautifully lighted with a nearby flood lamp and a rotating color wheel. |
